Welcome to the Wintergreen Alpine Race Team

The Wintergreen Ski Race Team is going into its 19th season at Wintergreen Resort. The team is very strong once again with a lot of dedicated racers coming back to pursue top place finishes in our region. Ski racing in the south is an opportunity for dedicated kids to participate in a very unique and challenging sport. Wintergreen plans to continue to promote ski racing by offering the best coaching and training conditions in the region. The program is designed to help kids set goals, learn to be self disciplined in preparation for events and be competitive while supporting teammates and competitors. The social setting is very positive as families get to know each other by traveling to races and working together in volunteering to help with events and training.

Winter Teams Update November 1 2011

Wintergreen will show the new Warren Miller ski movie in the Dome on Saturday November 26 th at 8pm. There will be refreshments, popcorn and a cash bar for the adults. What a great way to get excited for the season.

NASTAR racing is a go and we will offer dual and single racing on the right side of Eagle Swoop this winter. Season passes will be available. Season passes will allow for unlimited runs on days the course is open. We will try to offer NASTAR Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons when adequate terrain is open.

The Copper Camp is very popular this year and we will take the largest group to date with most folks choosing to come for the whole week. There are some exciting changes to the trip this year including charter busses providing transport from the airport in Denver to Copper Mountain and some of the dinner meals will be buffet style dinning provided by the resort. We are excited to be able to offer these valued changes to the camp. Even though we have so many signed up, I still have room for a few more but I would have to receive your registration and payment by the end of the day Friday.

Race Team

Your first practice will be on Saturday November 26 th. You will receive another update before that date with details on what to expect.

Development Team

For those going to Copper we look forward to skiing with you there. For those not going make sure you try and get on the snow as soon as we are open and your first practice will be December 27 th.

Freeride Team

Your training schedule is attached. Remember that there are some USASA events that could interfere with practice such as the Snowboard SL and GS races we are hosting here at Wintergreen on January 7 th and 8 th 2011. There will be other USASA events in the Appalachian region and you can view those events at USASA. The first event for the Freeride team is November 12 th and 13 th. If you are a serious Freeride team athlete you should have renewed your membership and be planning on attending this event. What a great way to get a jump start on your season at an event close to Wintergreen.

The Ultimate goal of the Freeride team member at Wintergreen competing as a USASA member is to go to nationals at Copper Mountain in April. Every Year Wintergreen Has Freeride Athletes who qualify and go to the national event.

Winter Teams Update  September 29, 2011

Race Team

The schedule for SARA races this winter is not finalized and is not yet posted. I have seen enough of it to come up with a wintergreen schedule which I have attached to this email. You can use this to plan your winter. Click Here for Schedule

D-team

The attached schedule also shows D-team practice dates and D-team Race dates.

Freeride team

The USASA schedule for the Appalachian Region is not yet complete. Wintergreen is slated to host a slopestyle.

There is only one Freeride team athlete signed up for Copper. I really want to send a WTG Freeride coach but I need more team members to do that. If you are thinking about going please let me know. The early season on snow time is very valuable along with the trips to the Woodward Barn indoor facility. If you have interest or questions give me a call. 434-989-2541.

Copper camp

I am attaching a copy of the registration form. If you are thinking about going and you have not contacted me please let me know. I have a lot of people going from our team and I have also offered the registration forms to the Snowshoe Team and the Bryce team. I don’t know how much interest I will get from those teams but you might want to get in before them just in case.

If you did not get the original message be informed that Kathy Hurd-Carillo will be a guest coach at the camp along with Shaun Goodwin. We have also received tentative notice that up and coming world cup racer Megan MacJames will be skiing with our group the first half of the week. These guest coaches and ski team members help to make the camp successful and exciting.

Equipment

A couple of weeks ago we sent an email explaining the process we are promoting to help you be well equipped for the winter. I am attaching that information again as we did not get much response. I know a lot of you will need equipment and I also know you are busy. Just understand the way the ski gear industry works the longer you wait the harder it is to get the equipment you will need for the season. Take a look at the attachment and follow the process.

Winter Teams Update

September 1 2011

Some exciting events coming to Wintergreen this season 2011-12.

  • Wintergreen will host the J 4-5 SARA Championships on March 3-4 2012. We are excited to host Champs here again this winter. It has been a few years so some of you will not remember a champs event here. There is a lot to do not including the races there is a banquet dinner with raffle prizes and season awards. We need to come up with a theme for the banquet and be prepared to decorate. We need to solicit sponsorship to help pay for souvenir bibs, think about pictures and video to show at the banquet and sell to participating families, choose menus and other fun stuff. We will need everyone’s help with this project and we will be meeting with The Boosters officers to get rolling soon.
  • Wintergreen will host the College regional championships in February again this winter. This event will take place on the 15 th, 16 th and 17 th of February. That is the Wednesday-Friday before presidents day weekend and so will not affect our teams training. This is a big event and we are thrilled to take on this challenge.

Early season Race and Freeride camp at Copper Mountain Colorado. Information about the camp is attached to this email as well as the registration form. For those who know they are registering go ahead and fill out the word doc form and send it in. For those who need more info or have question call or email me. An interesting addition to the camp is guest coach Kathy Hurd-Carrillo. Kathy has agreed to be a guest coach with us and we are excited to have her along. A lot of you will recognize Kathy as a longtime coach at Bryce Resort and Master racer. Kathy is also a professional ice skater and she also runs a dance studio. Teaching and coaching youth athletics is what Kathy is all about. Guest Coach Shaun Goodwin will also be with us again as well as your Wintergreen coaches. For those who have gone in the past you will be happy to hear we will be back in the center village this year at Copper.

I know it is early and school is just starting and your schedules are busy. If you are serious about your Winter sport you should spend some time now training for winter. Ski racers can do some rollerblading. This is an excellent way to work on balance and even timing if you set up some cones and ski around them. Ice skating is a great way to keep your skiing movements active. I know most of you are playing some type of fall sport but if you are not you need to be doing something.

Freeriders should think about visiting the snowflex center in Lynchburg. There is no charge if you let them know you are on the Wintergreen team.

News and Announcements

Below is a list of upcoming events, changes, important information.

News

Hello Wintergreen team athletes and parents,

It is time to start thinking about equipment for the coming season.  Product will be more difficult to obtain than ever due to a “perfect storm” of situations in the cottage industry of alpine skiing.  The Wintergreen team is working closely with Freestyle ski shop to provide the highest level of product availability and service.  The collaborative process is designed to help Freestyle determine the level of inventory that will best serve the needs of our team.  Comprehensive information will make the transition to new equipment easier for parents and athletes.

Please review the following information carefully and respond appropriately!

NEW EQUIPMENT

If you anticipate the need for new equipment, please respond to the following request by forwarding this email with your response to:

Robert_sandy@comcast.net

After reviewing each athlete, fill out the form below.  ONLY fill it out for those athletes who will need new equipment.  Simply select reply in your email application and scroll down to the form below to fill it out and then send it to robert_sandy@comcast.net

Please try to have this information back to Robert by Monday, 9/12/2011.

USED EQUIPMENT

If you have equipment to sell or are looking to acquire equipment from other team members simply fill out the attached form called WINTERGREEN RACE TEAM EQUIP LIST 9-6-2011 and forward the form to Paul Given at:

Paul Given

Paul will then post the information to the wintergreen race team website.  While this may not be the most sophisticated site on the web, it does work well and we are looking to improve the site.  We have great success with this process in the past and one family even sold a pair of skis to an athlete in Canada!

http://wtgraceteam.org/EquipmentExchange.php

Ski sizing is as follows; for slalom skis we would like the ski tip to be between the athlete’s chin and nose.  For giant slalom skis we would like to ski tip to be above the athlete’s head by at least a couple of inches but not more than four inches.  Freestyle can assist in sizing athletes with skis.

Boots should be sized by Freestyle during an appointment.  To schedule an appointment simply contact Don Cochrane by phone or email. (434-978-4091)

dcochrane@freestyleonline.com

Don will schedule your athlete with a Freestyle technician to provide ski sizing and boot fitting.  Please remember that any Freestyle team discount should be discussed discreetly and that appointments may not be available during busy times such as weekend afternoons.

If you have any questions regarding this information or anything else please feel free to contact Robert Sandy at any time
